I recently ran into an 1877 IHC whilst traveling and realized to late what a great find it is. Though it appears to be of fairly low grade do you think its worth it to ship it for like 20 bucks and any recommendations for shipping coins?

If you can add a picture and price of the coin then that'll make answering easier.
It doesn't matter what shipping costs, just make sure that you include it when you calculate what you would like to spend. Be careful, there are fakes everywhere, especially with key-date coins. If it is too good to be true, it probably is.

We need to help with this. Keep in mind, the 1877 IHC is very rare and in high demand. Even in the lowest grades this coin can sell for several hundred dollars.

Make sure that the coin isn't a counterfeit. There are several known copies out there.

We should be able to help you determine if it's real or not, but we need pictures.

Sorry everyone! The main reason I have to ship is because I need a friend to pick it up since I'm longer where the coin is at its onl 3.50 so I'll have him grab it and send pics before dealing with shipping. The person who is selling this seems to have just come into a whole bunch of random coins so it seems like it may be legit. I'll try to get pics within the coming days.

I think it would be helpful to be more clear and specific about this. What exactly are "like 20 bucks" and "onl[y] 3.50" referring to? Shipping costs? What are you paying for the coin? Numismedia shows a G4 current price as $468. "The person who is selling this seems to have just come into a whole bunch of random coins" makes me feel like you're getting scammed.

If you are thinking of buying this coin, do NOT until you have shown us photographs
of both sides of the coin. IH are one of the most counterfeited coins out there.

A few points. The coin only costs 3.50 the display housed several other coins all priced around 3.50 it seems like the person came into them and is unaware of the true value of some of them. I will send pictures latter today because I am buying it best case its real worst I lost 3.50. I'll send pics of it once my friend gets it and then go from there.

If your buying an 1877 for $3.50, chances are its not real. If it is buy 2, I'll give you $5 for the 2nd

Being serious, there are several pretty expensive Indian Head cents, a set in Good (56 coins) has a greysheet (wholesale) of $1400 while a set in VF is $4500.

This is my set with mostly higher grades for the common coins and G to F for the keys and semi keys and I paid over $1000 a few years ago.

And here are a few of my higher grade slabbed coins which are much more than $1000

Can't help authenticate it without pics, but at least you're not risking much.

Pessimistic point of view:
Very commonly faked year. In this day and age, rarely do you come across such a deal and have it be authentic. Just because they say it was a "recently inherited/acquired" collection, doesn't make it true, we see this.."scam" all the time.

Realist point of view:
See the above comments

Optimistic point of view:
Sometimes people really don't know what they have and you can truly find a steal like this. Seems like a no brainer at that price, even with shipping costs. If it turns out to be fake, you paid a relatively cheap learning experience and have an example to add to the "what to look for in a counterfeit" album. Others have spent much more than that on fakes.

Or, the person knows exactly what they have and have priced the items appropriately.

Hope it works out for you but when things seem to good to be true....

Seems everyone is okay with the seller getting ripped off, but not the buyer. No one is talking about taking advantage of another person.

If this was a real 1877 (which like 99% chance its not) I would think that there would be more concern for the seller, but its a new poster, who didn't even know that an 1877 was a key date and uber expensive, so either you have 2 clueless people or 1 (the seller) most likely knows its not real. I could be wrong, but the likelihood is that its fake.
