What Is Cloudiness That Messes Up Finish On These Morgans?

Numiscrat Valued Member United States 221 Posts	Posted 09/13/2021 5:56 pm Top pic is too fuzzy to help much, but looking at the bottom, I am wondering if that "cloudiness" might be the remnants of a kind of frosty original mint luster. The coin looks somewhat circulated or rubbed, and the whiter areas are in the field near the devices which can provide some protection for the original surface. The white areas look like they still show the metal flow during striking. Report this Post to the Staff

I am still leaning towards the white area being the original surface, but I am not a Morgan connoisseur like some of the other members are. fenton Pillar of the Community United States 4989 Posts	Posted 09/14/2021 6:47 pm Might be dipped but probably circulation wear which is very evident on the first photo. As a coin circulates, it will quickly lose its mint frost and become an AU example. AU-58 coins still have some luster but an AU-53 would have virtually none left. Depending on how it was handled, the coin may have very few marks but still exhibit poor luster. Finger oils and contact with a pocket will do that quickly.
