How did this coin get the maroon color it has on obverse? Never seen one this extreme.

I would say it's environmental damage. Exactly what caused it will likely never be known.

In that condition, it would be worth the value of the copper.
Probably about Two Cents.

Exposure to an environmental agent (or two). I've searched through endless mountains of Lincoln cents over the years. While the maroon look isn't wildly plentiful, they are out there--particularly full copper cents.

Could it have been painted brown (or what ever color that is) and is being worn off the high points to reveal the true color that lies beneath?
