On an on-line auction I saw a slabbed 1955 double die graded "genuine" by PCGS and "not gradeable". Why can't a decent double die be graded? Edited by EDM 08/16/2021 8:50 pm

John calls it - PCGS apparently felt the coloring was not original.

Worth a shot of cracking out and sending to NGC. Maybe let it sit out for some time and tone out. Maybe even Taco Bell it.

Gee, I've got so many LWC I've had for 50+ years that have the exact same color as this one, right out of the piggy bank. Grading or not, this '55 DD should bring about 2 grand?

Quote: Maybe even Taco Bell it. I'm a little afraid to ask, but how do you "Taco Bell" a coin? After a little searching, maybe this: http://goccf.com/t/50357Weird. Just weird.

if I owned this coin I would be inclined to break it out and send it in again. this is one that would be worth the cost to get a straight grade. the angle of the photos make it difficult to grade but it looks high AU. it could be the difference between a $2000 coin and a $1500 coin

I bow to no one in my admiration of the educators on this site. Still, I think you experts have all failed this student.
I have some self-taught learning that I deem appropos to this post. @EDM, as with all self-taught mentor offerings, I urge that you run this by the experts here to keep your info on straight course. See if any think I'm steering you home.
"Why can't a decent double die be graded?" (Should read "doubled die.")
@EDM, grades are numbers 1 through 70. Sixty is the most crucial. Coins below 60 are circulated coins. they are graded (numbered comparatively) based primarily upon wear due to circulation. However, if two coins have been subjected to equal wear, but one was born with more scratches etc. or one suffered more woe and strife while circulating than the other, the assigned numbers will not match.
Grades 60 and above are assigned to coins that cannot be judged according to wear. Nothing to judge -- no wear. Sixty to 70 are mint state coins. Here the mint's success is under judgement. Is the coin as expected? (MS64) Less than expected? (MS60, MS61, M62, or MS63) Better then expected? More than MS64.
PCGS could not assess the (non-existent) circulation wear on the coin you posted. Nor could PCGS assess how well the mint did, because they are unsure sure everything done to the coin submitted for grading was done by the mint. No wear/no mint state assessment/no grade.

PCGS and NGC are very particular about color. The best approach, should this be an off color coin, would be to allow it to retone. I like the window sill treatment. I have gotten coins back from the TPGs that they wouldn't grade and successfully resubmitted them after letting them tone.
