Hi
When deciding if a nickel has 6 full step are the steps on either side of the center looked at as well?
Thanks Eric

@eric, I'm not super knowledgeable about grading, but I've always thought that a full step had to be full across its entire width.

Well That is what I would think as well, all three sets of step must have all the stairs not just the center. I was looking a few "examples" and they only seemed to apply to the center set of steps.
Thanks Guys!

Guys, he's talking about the smaller side steps on the east and west side of Monticello...Graders go by the center step structure.

Ah yes sorry about that @eric. I didn't realize that you meant the side steps rather than the side of the main steps.

I never considered the side steps on Monticello was the question. Greasy Fingers was thinking on this one. Full Step nickel designation is not concerned with those "other" steps. Only the steps under the pillars are studied.

To me, I enjoy to find a Jefferson nickel in the wild with all steps fully represented. Front and both sides. Even though TPG might only look at the center set of steps, I would think if you plan to sell the nickel that having all sets of steps fully defined would make the nickel more desirable.

Front and both sides this would be a personal preference and maybe there are other collectors that would feel the same. I have similar criteria for Full bands on a Merc. the standard is the center band. I want to see all three separated
