So I have two 1865 Fancy Fives from my brother-in-law's coin collection. Both were graded AU50 by ANACS. He passed away in February so I can't ask him about it and my sister doesn't know anything about coin collecting. Can anyone tell me what's the difference? Does one have an error? What does this do to the value?

https://www.NGCcoin.com/variety-plu...ited-states/Quote from the above 1865 FANCY 5 1C MS Diagnostics The top of numeral 5 is straight for half its width and sharply curved for the remainder. The vertical stroke points to the ball. It's a pretty good site to view some common varieties. smat

I'm sorry for the confusion. I'm more concerned about the RE-ENGRAVING. Did they mean that a portion of it was redone at the mint (like some did with the dates), or did they mean it was retooled?

There were 2 distinct digit punches used in 1865 for Indian Head cents. The fancy 5 (which you have 2 nice examples of) and the plain 5. There are varieties for each set of digit punches, but we need really sharp pictures of the date to tell. Honestly, most of them dont command a premium in value. From first look, your coins do not appear to be retooled or recut.

Agree, close-ups would be needed to evaluate any date punch anomalies. to the CCF!

Sorry, they would have to be substantially larger.

I am not able to zoom in any closer between this phone and that stinking 300 thing that they have going on. Any other suggestions are welcome.

Anybody? I'm not trying to be rude, I just can't zoom in and I'm doing the only thing I know to do, which is crop the picture.

Hi MissyLynn, Im not sure what you are trying to figure out here. You have 2 1865 Fancy 5s and you do know that. I don't think you have anything other than that, and if you did have a minor Repunched date on your hands, its not really going to affect the value of what you have. These are just like the 1000s of other 1865 Fancy 5s out there. These are in pretty good shape, and as described earlier, they are worth $60-$75 each. We are all trying to be helpful here, but there is nothing else we can do with the pictures provided.

I'm just trying to educate myself. Both coins were graded by ANACS and I'm wanting to know what they saw. I've got two jewelers loupes, one of which has an LED light. I've tried examining them with both loupes and haven't seen anything to indicate re-engraving. Anywhere. But why would ANACS put that on the label if someone somewhere didn't see it (unless THAT was an error)?
