@coinrook138 Beautiful coin, and thanks for updating with the better photos! This is definitely a double strike in the collar and worth hundreds of dollars as tropicalbats said. I recommend sending a beautiful example like this to PCGS for attribution. Sorry to hear about your grandfather, but this coin is a lovely memento to have to remember him.

Sounds like my Grandpa held on to a nice coin! Based on the feedback, my next step is to get it graded. Thanks to all for the insights.

I agree, this is a very nice, special coin. If it was mine, I would send it off to PCGS for authentication (and only PCGS). It was your grandfather's coin, cherish it!   to the CCF!  |

Cujohn, I'm going through all the coins now. Nothing jumping out as rare (except the error penny I posted). A bunch of Buffalo nickels, early silver Washington quarters, a ton of bicentennial quarters in good shape, a bunch of old pennies, a 1845 one cent piece, a bunch of gold plated coins. It looks like other family members snagged most of the good stuff. |

Again, to the CCF!  This topic is a perfect example of why we ask for Clear, Cropped, Focused pictures. The updated images make it clear that you have a fantastic error. Please let us know how the coin grades when you have it certified and post the TPG images, if possible. Thanks for posting and for updating the images of your coin. I agree with Yokozuna about this being why we request clear photos, but I'd also add that this thread is a good example of why we, the more experienced members on the forum, need to be careful about not dismissing any post we see from a new member with bad pictures as a vise job, MD, DDD, etc. The overwhelming majority of coins are not errors, so if you reply to every newbie post with a "nah, just [blank]" knee jerk response, you'll be correct 99% of the time, and you can be fooled into thinking you're doing a good job of correctly answering questions, when in fact a machine that just responded "no" to every post would have had the same 99% accuracy as you. We have to remember that the coins we're dismissing out of hand can be someone's cherished family possession like this coin is, and the last thing any of us would want to do is to be the reason why a new member throws away a several hundred dollar coin that belonged to their grandfather. Think and look carefully before you respond to any post. |
