What kind of error is this? Came from a sealed pennies only piggy bank that was started in the 80s and filled by the mid 90s.

. Looks like major "road rash" aka "parking Lot Coin" aka PMD. Not a mint error.

@mrf, first welcome to CCF. Second, for sure that cent is just damaged. Since it has the Lincoln Memorial on the back, but is not copper plated, the date would be in the range of 1959 to 1982.

It is only an error if it happened during the striking of the coin
and what you have is impossible to have happened then. PMD

Still, the good news is you may have a pile of cents that many members here would enjoy looking through. I am assuming they were pulled from circulation early on, which means they will be nicer and easier to study than ones which have had longer careers in circulation.

The bad news is, you have to do your homework. Damaged coins are almost always more obviously different than even some of the best errors and varieties. It takes effort to learn. I know. I have been on this website nearly a year, and still feel profoundly ignorant at times with regards to errors and varieties. So, I keep reading and studying.

How do you know it's even a US coin? I don't see a single identifying part of this hunk of metal, in fact, you probably would have problems turning it in at a bank or store. Definitely NOT a mint error, IF it is a coin, it's post mint damage PMD.

If you look closely, you can barely see the outline of the Lincoln memorial in the first picture.

But it one extremely beat up cent. on the up side, it is still worth one cent.

If I squint, I sort of see the outline of Lincoln's portrait on the 2nd pic. That sure is one beat-to-heck cent!
