I am wondering about the dullness of this quarter. Is this a clad error. It's only 3 years old. Could this be caused by someone buffing it off? And the rim damage? That's what is confusing me.
Just trying to figure out if this is mint error or something done in someone's garage? Thanks.

Looks like environmental damage to me - possibly a metal detector find. The bumps on the rim could be the result of it having been dropped and knocked around before it got buried. Cupro-nickel coins buried in earth can turn dark brown within a very short time. The porous surfaces remind me of coins I've dug up on the beach.

@miss, I agree with the above comments by @numis and would add that a missing clad coin would be noticeably underweight. What is the weight of this coin?

Environmental damage.
If it was missing the clad it would be a copper colour.

Just a damaged coin. Regardless of its age, it doesn't come back looking nice when it has been a garage with a mad man altering the coin. Damage to a coin is just a face value coin. If post strike damage made a coin worth more, then all coins would all be altered and we wouldn't have any change as they would have been collected. Just a spender. Note a mint error.

In addition to environmental tarnishing/toning/discolouration, this quarter looks to be harshly cleaned. Spend it and keep searching!

Ok. Wasn't sure. I never clean my coins. What I post, us how I find them. No altering! I'm really asking and doing a lot of research on my own. The thing us, once I stumble upon something of significance, I'll know for sure what I'm looking for besides reading and researching. Until you get a definitive find, then ya go oh, finally got it!
I did weigh it and it comes to 5.6 g. If that makes any difference. The thing us, when researching and looking in my book, they'll show an error, that looks exactly like what I have, then find out that someone did this "error" on purpose!
Thanks again!

If yo want to learn what real errors are, go to a website like error-ref.com
Things like dings, gouges, scratches, discolouration etc. are not generally errors.
Remember, it is only an error if it happens during the actual striking of the coin,
so anything that happens to it after that is damage.
