Hi,
I'm new at collecting coins and ran across this one. It's a 1959 D penny. I was just wanting to know what the metal band around the rim was? I've search online everywhere and I can't seem to find anything out about it.

@suzy, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree that this cent is encased, which was done after it left the mint. If you inspect the band along the edge, you might find evidence of torn metal where the loop was broken off.

Yes I can see where the metal is torn. That's why I was wondering why it was put on there. It was the only one that had that. All the other coins were in a case just not one around the rim.
Thank you both for the response. Appreciate it.
This is the first time getting into coins, I'm really enjoying it. #128515;

Looks more like a brass bezel.
