I've seen some posting about buying a certified coin and cracking it out of it's slab to place it in an album and keeping the slab as proof that the coin was certified.
I was wondering, since the grading service are aware that most coins are placed in albums why don't they provide a 'plug' (like an air tight) to place in an album that would say, using a 1909 VDB as an example, "PCGS 1909 VDB 1c MS65RB"? That why you'd have the hole filled and the slabbed coin.

Security would be a big reason. An Air-Tite like "plug" wouldn't accommadate a serial number and hologram.

Excellent idea!
I think the first two posters mis-understood what you're saying. You would keep the coin in the slab, but you would get a "plug" from PCGS saying that you have a 1909-S VDB, etc.
Of course, you could do it yourself, but it would be cool to get one from the Grading Service. And authentication isn't necessary - who cares if you counterfeit the plug?
Of course, some people want to "see" the coin - hologram. But this is a nice "middle of the road" solution to cracking out or not putting anything at all in there.

The plug could have a picture of the coin in the slab on one side and the details on the other. Very good idea jewellge.

On my euro collection, some coins weren't made in certain year by certain countries. That leaves a blank spot that would never be filled. I put a similar coin in tails up to fill the spot. You could do that for a plug just to remind yourself it is filled (in your collection).

An interesting idea, but I would still crack the coin out of the slab and put it in the hole. It would just not feel truly complete otherwise. This is just one man's opinion.

What has been the best way you have found to crack out your coin from its slab? NGC and PCGS...

I'd go with a dremel tool!
