There is clearly some visible damage, yet it has a great provenance.

$1050 for a cricket with just under 60 days remaining.. when you think you've seen it all

China has been missing out on an inexpensive counterfeiting venture all these years too!

This will be a highlight of someone's error collection when someone hears crickets every time they look at it, or the cricket decided to become a coin but was graded details because it is in pieces and damaged.

Yuck! At least this coin (err cricket) has a funny story. I think this is officially the most expensive cricket on earth! And ya, why didn't he get graded? I would say he deserves an AU-58 details grade-detached head.

Well it is at least the only cricket that I would ever consider buying (not that I would ever pay $1000 for a dead bug).

Lunacy is a good description for this rattler.

Could be a fake slab. PCGS logo looks shoddy.
Rest in Peace

Post mint damage.

Crickets are a sign of good luck in some cultures so that could be driving the price up.

This would have been a completely intact cricket when caught but it was tortured, dismembered and beheaded in anger after it was captured.

For the past 20 odd years, graders have been wasting turn-around time using this slab as a dexterity game on the job.
The object of the game is to turn and tilt the slab and attempt to put the cricket parts back where they belong.

None have been able to solve the "puzzle" so the novelty has worn off and away to auction it goes.

Next in the series is the infamous 2005 housefly that haunted San Francisco mint employees until it finally became a struck through error on a proof Bison nickel.

Now up to $1300, before buyer's fee, and two months to go. Absolutely crazy in my mind, so-called legend or not, but to each his own...

Next time my cat brings home a dead mouse, should I pack up the deceased rodent and send it off to PCGS for grading?
