I was wondering if it would be right or wrong for a mod to PM members who just are not getting it . There are a few members with post counts near 100 that seem not to have any common sense . Maybe a mod could suggest the stamp forum to them, just thinking out loud. John1

If you try to correct some of those not getting it, they sure get angry really quick, especially with the $100,000 fake copper 1943 cent.

This is a very delicate issue and I think that the mods will do something in extreme cases, whatever they might be. You really need to be careful not to scare off new people who know little and are really are trying to learn.

Often it's self-correcting. It's not 100 posts, it's 100 quality posts. The mods do seem to keep an eye on the newbies.

But really though, if a member has nearly 100 post of whatever kind and just don't get it they are wasting their time and forum space...right? Numismatics isn't for everyone, we have a nice stamp forum and there are a ton of other hobbies those types of members can get into. John1

Think of it also from Bobby's viewpoint. More members equals more traffic and more exposure to the hobby and as older members pass on (like CrazyBo or Moxking) you need new members to continue the forum. Also as more members equal more search engine optimization you get a loop, which causes more people to come. For ever member like a Dearborn or Coinfrog or John (even though he isn't good at grading and always wants contests) we get a lot "hey I found this penny in the parking lot after I drove it a few times, look at it, no way it was like this, it must have come from the mint". Heck a few probably damage the coins themselves, take it for what it is. I only get annoyed when they are nasty but the average clueless newby is generally harmless.
Also doesn't help that many newbies don't read and all they see is a video on you tube saying I made millions looking through my change. Yes you can find a 1909 S VSB and a 1943 copper cent and make millions, in today's climate of being naive that's all it take to think you won the coin lottery.

I think we should be careful and distinguish between newbies who are overly enthusiastic and those that are stubborn and have an attitude of "my way or the highway".

A touchy subject that I often have to control myself commenting on some of the newbies that this thread is about . Yes some of them just don't get it and cannot be told differently . We have to remember this is community forum , if we want to help with an unrealistic question we'll click on to it . If not , simply ignore it and move on to another thread or post . I fail to see how it's helping them to tell a slow-learning member who perhaps has only been in the hobby a few months that they should find another hobby.

I wonder if anyone who has commented on this thread has taught at a public school. Teachers don't get to pick their students. One plays the hand they are dealt.
Another observation—knowledgeable members can get very worked up over someone who is delusional, and may spend an inordinate amount of time on their threads. It happens to me, too. But, if that energy was redirected towards those who are trying and working, that would be much more beneficial to all. Some members are really good at that.

I differentiate between STUPID and UNEDUCATED.
You can't fix STUPID, even with WD40 and Duct Tape.
You can educate UNEDUCATED.

There's a big difference between (a) those who join only to get confirmation of their ill-informed opinion while sometimes rudely discounting any expert advice to the contrary, and (b) those who are genuinely interested but may be slow learners. It's natural for a subject-matter expert to get frustrated by someone who seemingly "just doesn't get it", even after repeatedly being given the same instruction or advice. I taught college algebra for non-math majors from 1980-82 at Virginia Tech, so I fully understand that feeling! Even though I've only been a member of this forum for a few months, when I see someone in category (a) I simply ignore all their posts. Pretty easy to do, as they tend to not stick around for long. I think for those in category (b), if they choose to stick around I believe that having patience and continuing to offer constructive guidance is the best way forward. Is it aggravating at times? Absolutely, but at least some of these folks will gradually learn and grow and start the climb up the learning curve.

It actually amazes me how lightly moderated this forum is. On some other forums I frequent, if anyone - including newbies - start name-calling anyone else, they immediately get banned and/or IP blocked.

Quote: It actually amazes me how lightly moderated this forum is. I could put you into the dungeon with everything we have removed from public view. (We keep all evidence.) The staff is small, but we do what we can. Much of the real work is done by members using the "Report this Post to the Staff" link that is at the lower right corner of every post. Thank you, all who have done this. A huge help comes from Bobby's automated scripts which keep most spam and all the naughty words out of our community. I guess it is "out of sight, out of mind," but you do not want us to go on strike. Things would get ugly fast.
