Came across this 1989 Lincoln Cent with the Obverse concaved and the Reverse rounded and missing most copper. Two questions: 1) What could have caused this? 2) Is the date a true Doubled Die or (as suspected) Machine doubled?
Looks like the obverse is showing polishing. Note the date/bust area. How weak the bust outline is on that area. Just slight wear on the tops of the devices flattening the tops of the date devices. The reverse looks like someone heat the back with a cigarette lighter. Just another coin to release into the wild again.
Machine Doubling-as suspected (feared). The lighter/post-mint damage didn't occur to me, but it makes sense. Thanks for your collective explanations + Mr. C's links are very much appreciated! The hunt continues...
