While this may be of interest to only beginning currency collectors, I thought I'd share my type collection of Legal Tender Notes. This is an easy type set to assemble and doesn't cost a lot to complete. These notes were printed to fulfill the requirements of The Act of May 3, 1878 which required the amount of United States Notes outstanding be maintained at a specified dollar amount. The last notes printed to fulfill this requirement were the $100 Series 1966 notes. After the act was repealed in the early 1990's, all notes still residing in the Treasury vaults to fulfill this obligation were destroyed. My basic type set, defined by the Friedberg design numbers 188 through 194A, consists of 8 notes. Notice one note is the $2 Series 1928D mule. For these notes, a mule is one which has a micro-size plate number on one side, and a macro-size plate number on the other. These were created during the transition from micro- to macro-size plate numbers when both old and new plates were in use. Mules can be found in several series of $2 and $5 Legal Tender Notes. My set also has the $5 Series 1928F Narrow note. While you'll find various Narrow and Wide designations for different types of notes, it can have different meanings depending on which note it's in reference to. For this particular note, it refers to variations in a minor design element on the reverse. The $5 Series 1928-F note is the only Legal Tender Note with Narrow and Wide varieties. Apologies in advance for the picture quality - these were taken at different times, and I was not successful in getting the lighting and background consistent.

Thanks, hfhacinto! Just as I've been doing for years with my type coin collection, I'm sure at some point I'll start adding "extras" to this (and other) currency type sets of mine! Star notes and main varieties will be the first I'll start adding on. The fun never ends .

@hokie_fan I hope you understand that I'm just joking with you. Every currency and coin set you posted have been beautiful! I'm talking drool worthy! There are no updates needed but this place likes to "bully" people into adding coins/currency they weren't planning. I'm just doing my part to make you spend money

@hfjacinto - yes, I knew you were just kidding there, and to be honest (and my dear wife of 41 years will confirm) I need absolutely zero encouragement to spend more to continue expanding my collection! I don't upgrade very often, but I always seem to find excuses to add more examples to my so-called type sets.

@Greasy Fingers - CDN Greensheet for the Series 1928 $1 LTN in Gem Uncirculated 65 is $450, and I paid $475 for this particular example about a year ago.

Thanks, everyone! @jonjrl1963 - as mentioned, this is just a basic type set, one from each design as defined by Friedberg. Building a full set of an example from each series for each type would be a more expensive endeavor, particularly for the two you mention. Then, if you get into a complete set with all star notes, mules and other varieties, then the price goes through the roof!

Really nice set of high-end notes. My poor-man's set is raw/AU...which is actually one of the cool things about collecting these since they are collectible in different ways by different folks. FWIW, I don't collect star notes...maybe 2 years ago when our friend hfjacinto was setting a record-breaking pace putting together his small note collection, I suggested he might add a single star note as an example. He still hangs it over my head claiming I bullied him into getting some.
