I have done some trades of coins recently with collectors around the world. Today I went to post some coins they were wrapped and tapped between two postcard sized pieces of card in a standard envelope. One to Israel and one to India only weighed 80 grams each and one to Russia weighing 200 grams and the post office wanted to charge $140

The prices quoted online were much cheaper but still expensive anyway I took a risk and stuck a bunch of stamps on them and made sure they had my return address so fingers crossed they get to their destination or back to me.

On the downside this has scared me right off trading coins outside Australia and I don't have anything of interest to Australian collectors so a bit of a catch 22.

Maybe they tried to charge you for parcel post.
Keep them under 20mm thick and they should go as a letter rate.
I have been told, that because of a lack of flights there is no economy rate.

Send coins one at a time with cover note, explaining why.
At least you spread your risk with safety in numbers.

One of my friends had a whole front suspension for his car shipped to him from overseas, arrived within three weeks of order, by air freight.
I will have to ask him how it was done.
One thing I know for sure: it wasn't shipped by parcel post.

I gave up trading quite a few years ago, in part due to the increasing cost of postage (although not nearly as bad as your example).

indeed unless its medical equipment freighting values have gone through the roof, air and sea. Sadly don't see it coming down anytime soon.

Yikes. I recently sent ~300g letter (about a4 size) with 80-100 coins to Sweden for $55. Maybe AusPost is competing with ebay's GSP?

It is the same here in NZ, airpost is outrageous and you need to declare with green stickers or red forms.

Why I always send under 100 grams (82grams when I allow 18 grams for cardboard and packaging and it costs me just $2.80 to Oz and $3.50 for the rest of the world.

Worried about sending coins to India and Russia, both countries have relaly bad postal systems, have notorious corruption and a lot of individuals I have dealt with from those places with stamps are either scavengers or scammers. So be careful.

However PC types, don't angry as I said a lot, not "all" and I am sure there are some fantastic and sincere collectors/traders in those countries.

A Polish friend of mine says never trust Russians, and trust Poles even less!
