I picked this up for $3,004 in an ANACS XF45 holder. I figure the dealer that I bought it from already tried to cross it over unsuccessfully although I didn't ask. Thoughts? Thanks!

Might be a candidate for conservation and crossover.

Huge gamble though. I wouldn't risk it myself. Too much at stake!

I like the coin. I am at VF35 and that puts it close to the range of purchase price.

@westernsky what would this be conserved for? I can't see any damage. The toning is splotchy in the reverse but I wouldn't call that damage. In any event, this one didn't feel like much of a gamble given it already sits in a straight grade holder and has a reasonable return privilege.

That is a very nice, original looking coin. This one is on my want list!

Nice coin, with clean fields. From the reverse toning, it looks like an old coin cabinet specimen. Purely by central device appearance, it might land at VF-35, but the peripherals are too sharp for a 35. Notice the depth of LIBERTY and details on the clouds. IMHO, this is a little bit of a soft central strike, and lands at EF-40. I could see the crossover block with ANACS coming in at 45. It's not an unreasonable grade, but seems to push the envelope. At EF-40, you snagged this pretty close to Greysheet. It's a nice one.

NS.

The greenish looking splotches above Miss Liberty's head are distracting to me. I cannot tell whether it's corrosion, pvc damage, gunk or just carbon spotting as the pictures are fuzzy and slightly out of focus. My concern would be the coin degrading in the holder over time.

All that really matters though is if YOU are happy with the coin.

Splotchy areas, especially on the reverse, are distracting to me as well.

I was playing around with the colors and contrast and saw a couple of odd details. The reverse detail looks like a die clash. The obverse X looks a little more odd and can't figure out what it is.

And what the heck is going on with the F on OF in the reverse?

personally I can see why they graded this one at XF45. some weakness in hair. center area of eagle weak. lettering and clouds pretty sharp, along with date and good edges on the ribbon in the hair. breast area and cheek very little rub and some luster around some of the devices is still there.

concerns: what appears to be verdigris around LIBERTY and rims on both sides

Although I got to BB-111 using the early dollar variety wizard, there was no weird reverse F in OF in this die pair's reverse die. The same reverse die was used for die pairs BB-110, 111, 112 and 113. Let me know if you end up in another variety for this coin's markers.

@numismatic student, The clash is interesting. Here's an overlay of your coin, assuming properly aligned dies. How's the die alignment?

I don't have the coin in hand but here are shots of the obverse and reverse in the slab which may give an idea. Maybe rotated 10-20 degrees?
