Is this a 1970S small date that I just picked up? It's still in the mint set   Edited by jewellge

I hear that mint sets are a good place to find small dates, and I thought this one was a large date, but I changed my mind (below)  This site has some very good diagnostic photos and descriptions of the differences between the two. 1970S date comparison - Large date is on top:   photos © Copyright 2007, Charles D. Now that I see your new detail of the date--how interesting. I feel like doing a 180 on this one. I was thrown by the rotation in the photo, the lighting and possible damage to the date. Lighting threw me off on the hook of the 9, but comparing the bottom of the 7 stroke against the 0, yours looks like a SD (imo)  |

This is a very odd looking coin, I would always look for the top of the 7 to be equal to the height of the zero on the small date cent, the zero on the large date would always be peaked above the top horizontal line of the 7, just my way to remember this difference.....at 1st glance I too thought different....  |

KurtS thanks for the effort.
I've got 2 1970 mint sets and I can compare the 2. As I roll the suspect in the light I can see the hooked 9, and the top of the 7 lines up with the 0. I think I got one on the cheap. I might have to celebrate and buy a high grade Walker with the money I 'saved'.
I'm going to pickup my new Lincoln page (with the 2009's) tomorrow and I'll take both mint sets with me and put it under stronger magnification.
So now do I cut it out and plug it in?

Hi,
What Kurt pointed out is the best way to determine which is which. I always look for the points on the 9....the level 7/0 concept causes my eyes to play tricks on me. The pointed 9 makes it a piece of cake to tell the difference. Then I check the 7 as a backup.
The coin in the upper picture at the beginning of the thread appears to be a large date.

Bill, Honestly, I do doubt myself in this case. It's solely my personal take, and doesn't reflect the forum or its staff. Nor am I questioning your expertise here--just my own lingering doubts, which might be illustrated in the following visual: 1. The "hook" on the 9 on this coin resembles a small date more than a large date as pictured. Granted, there appears to be MD on this coin. But, if this were a LD with that much damage to the 9, shouldn't there be a visible "shelf" of the remnant of the LD-style 9?  2. I also see that line across the top of the 7, but to be honest I've seen damage do this too, and this is admittedly a damaged coin. I think this demonstrates why a single photograph can be deceptive, because I also see that curve at the vertex of the top and bottom strokes of the 7, which is more indicative of a SD (imo). 3. I've looked at a few small dates, and one more determinant I've used is comparing the bottom stroke of the 7 to the 0. On the SD, the bottom of the 7 stroke ends very close to the baseline of the 0, terminating at an angle--on all SDs I've seen at least. On a LD, this 7 stroke ends notably lower than the 0, terminating in a flat end. In this case, my eyes are seeing the 7 terminating very much like a SD in regards to the 0. So that's why I have lingering doubts, and why I suspect a lone photo might not be enough here--at least for me. Someone will need to study this coin in-hand to be more certain--imo. |

Thanks all!
I had a dealer look at it and he says it's a small...soft LIBERTY, hooked 9 and the bottom of the 7 lines up with the bottom of the 0.
I'm going to cut it out and fill the hole even if it does look beat.

Kurt's last post convinced me that it is a small date. I think the loop on the 9 is more closed and pointing inward as a small date should. I believe that the Machine Doubling is causing the doubts. |
