i do not have a lot of experience with this coin. the question concerns the letter "M" stamped in the coin to the right of the bottom star (to the right of Ms. Liberty). is this a normal part of this coin or is it post mint - defacing. also grade opinions are appreciated. in my UNtrained opinion I give it G8. thanks.

The coin was designed by Hermon A. MacNeil. The M that you are talking about is his Initial. As far as grade, from what I can see it should grade between F-12 and F-15.

From the pics I would say there is enough shield detail for this SLQ to grade VF

I agree that the shield details are consistent with VF-20.

Yes, the "M" is a normal part of the coin and was put there by the mint.

I would agree this coin easily makes VF-20, maybe even VF-30. You see so many SLQs on ebay with heavy wear that a well-detailed example like this really stands out.

Nice collector coin!

Hmmm...the designer initial? Shows how little I know about this series.
Rest in Peace

Yep! It is a high or choice VF. The reverse is weaker than the obverse but this is a nice coin by all means.
