Hi, I was wondering if anyone could help me out with this penny. This was given back to me with my change and it caught my eye. But I have no idea if it's an actual error or what. I don't see any copper on the ridges or anywhere else on the coin, it weighs 2.55g and has the lines on both obverse and reverse. Oh and this is exactly how the coin looks I have not filtered or done anything with the color. I'm just curious since I'm new to coin collecting.

Thank you!

. Looks like environmental damage to me,not missing copper plating. Normal weight is 2.5 grams +/- .10 grams mint tolerance. Double check your scale for accuracy.

@ot, first welcome to CCF. Second, it looks to me like someone has stripped the copper plating off of this cent and left behind the zinc core.

Added: it is always interesting when the first two responses are opposites. I'm interested to see what the consensus is on this one.

Could we get an end-on photo of the rim? Thanks.

I have to agree with Spence on this one.
There is no sign of copper and all I see is a zinc core.
Someone or something has removed the copper plating.
If it was minted without the copper plating, the fields would be smooth.

I'd say Spence calls it.

I agree with Spence and other similar comments. And as mentioned, it would be most helpful to see a photo of the edge of this cent.

Sorry for the late response. I appreciate all the replies. Here is the rim of the penny.

How would someone remove the copper plating without more damage? Could it be a uncoated thick planchet with feeder finger marks? Still new at this and lots of stuff goes through my head.

A coated with zinc cent. Note the cookie crumb texture on last set of images on the rim. The coating enhances the rolling lines. Not a missing plating. There are recipes on how to do this on YouTube. On the real deal the fields are flat looking and smooth:
