I found this quarter in change. The oddest one I've ever found. What error caused this?

Not sure from the photos but looks like a vise job, from a coin smaller then a quarter due to the size of it.

Definitely a vise job. Looks like it was with a newer quarter that has USA and LIBERTY on the obverse.

Yup! I agree with Wrekkdd and Tanman. Someone put your coin into a vice and placed another coin next to it and applied a lot of pressure to the vice. This resulted in an incuse image into the surface of your Quarter. You can tell simply because the letters of the 'rogue' coin are backwards and reversed.

Vice for sure. AS Bumpkin pointed out, the incuse and backwards lettering is a dead giveaway.

Looks like the responses are split between this being a vise job and a vise job. As this most likely is an attempt to manufacture an error, I suppose all are correct.

Spence...... You got me there, I'll admit it..lol. I have several VISE (or is it 'vises'...) in my shop. I completely misspelled the word vise (in its context in my comment)...... I love it, good catch. But yet VICE is appropriate in British terms for the same sort of tool.
