I spent some time looking at silver dollars of this type. The 1796 is the common date in the Draped Bust/Small Eagle short lived three, not quite four year series with a larger mintage of 79,920 coins. I picked the one that I thought had the best eye appeal among those that I could find. Thoughts? Thanks!

I'm not exactly sure, but it's an indicator of a genuine variety, the Bolander #4 or BB-61 (Bowers & Borckardt) Small Date/Large Letters. R-3 rarity.

It can be seen on several of the PCGS True View coins. Here is one of them pictured where you can easily see it:

This one is a real beauty I'm in at EF45 and I'm pretty sure this is the coin that went unsold in the Stack's/Bowers August ANA Chicago 2014 sale Lot #4131

The Small Date, Large Letters variety in this example has an obverse die that had a dot impressed in it. Not sure why it came to be there. Maybe someone knowledgeable will come along and let us know.

The same coin did sell at Stack's in 10/17/2012. I like it better than most of the other examples at the same grade.

It sold in 2016 at a Bonham's auction, where it sold for a steal IMHO.

It is one of the nicer looking examples around I do agree!
