hello all, still trying to learn all the different variations and such. found this today.

While holding the coin it does not seem damaged, and actually has a good look to it. some of the lettering did not show up. the rim next to these areas does not appear to be damaged.

The purple color makes me think it might be chemical damage instead of a struck through.

Looks like where ever the purple tinting is, the devices are weaker. Not sure if there is a correlation or not

The purple marks aren't as strong as the magnification makes them look

Ok, these last photos help us more. It appears to be an issue where your coin is Struck Through Grease filled die. Only a slight premium if any. Check ebay's SOLD listings and find anything similar for a rough idea as to value.

I agree with @merc's analysis based on these newer pics, but would only add that there might be a die crack on the rev coming off the bottom right corner of the Lincoln Memorial, which is kinda fun.

There are actually two things happening. Correct on the grease but the other issue is die polishing. How to tell the differences?
1971-S-Lincoln-Cent---Strike-Through?

Here it is. ANACS took about 6 weeks. I used the summer facebook deal. 10 coins for $100. Variety attribution is $12 per coin. and I paid for the blanket conservation fee of $39. which I believe was well worth it as a few of the Lincoln cents had some gunk behind the lettering, which was removed. helped on the 1941 FS 101 that came back MS63.

Here is this one

I know the premium for this doesn't cover the cost, but I still like the look and how it turned out in the holder with a straight grade

On Liberty the devices are reduced in size. So the die had been through a strong polishing, then the motto devices were filled with grease. The difference?
1971-S-Lincoln-Cent---Strike-Through?
Polishing the die removes the base of the devices leaving the devices smaller in size.

1971-S-Lincoln-Cent---Strike-Through?
On a Grease Fill, the devices are enlarged as the tops of the devices are filled with grease and appear larger because the devices are tapered.

CoopHome: How can you tell if the devices were polished or filled with grease? The differences? reduced or wider is size
