It's been 33 years since the US issued it's first(?) and only commemorative banknote -- the Bicentennial $2 bill.
Yes, there have been two changes in the style of the notes (first the "big heads", then the current colored backgrounds, with their reverses that look so simplistic compared to the older issue.
Now might be a good time to start with some commemoratives, anyway, and assumably these would be scenes from US History.
Any ideas on what you would like to see?

Consider the level of hoarding of $2 bills (and all Bicentennial coinage, in general.) Imagine the level of hoarding that would occur if new bills hit the streets.
BUT... for argument's sake, would you want them to be FRNs or US Notes (non-interest bearing notes)? US Notes are really the only type of currency we could re-introduce without significant changes to our economy.

It a recession right now, so we need to inject every possible kind of curreny into the system. I think what we really need is an overhaul of our current money artistry. We need to have more modern fonts and designs... with modern fonts and security features.

If we are going to make changes, we should also switch to polymer banknotes!

You Americans can't even introduce a circulating dollar coin properly. You're nowhere near mature enough for plastic banknotes. Seriously, nowhere else issues commemorative banknotes very often, either. I think the Americans were some kind of trendsetters back when they issued the bicentennial one in 1976, and even those weren't overtly "commemorative". Australia has issued only two commemorative notes, the bicentennial $10 and centenary $5. There have also been a few mementos of coin shows etc, but these were ordinary note designs with either a small official overprint, or special serial numbers. Banknotes just haven't been seen as a medium for commemorative items.

If you want new commemorative banknotes all you have to do is talk with Delaware Congressman Mike Castle. I'm sure he will create a bill for them and get it passed. We could have the National Monument Dollar Bills series. They could issue 5 different bills a year for 15 years.

The only problem I see with this is the cost of making the plates to print the notes is alot higher than the cost to make a die to strike coins. I think that is why a plate is modified when only one signature changes on it and they then add a letter to the series number (like the 2003A). So to issue these several times a year like the coins would cost too much. I like the idea but I think a commemorative note would have to last for several years to be worth it. Maybe redesign the $2 note with a commemorative theme to get the public interested in it and then eliminate the $1 note. Just my opinion.

Clearly, a series of circulating commemorative bills would make more money for the government than a bunch of State Quarters. Each $5 bill that was put away would be equivalent to 20 State Quarters or 5 Presidential dollars. Even if the plates are expensive, just imagine the seigniorage (sp?) on this idea. Who knows the address of Congressman Castle's office?

Of course that might simply cause folks to start hoarding $1 bills a whole lot sooner. Pros and cons anyone?

Why don't we have commemorative $2 bills with rotating designs of the areas of the USA? Like we can start with the Atlantic NE, then go to the middle states... Dixie... SW... Pacific NW... etc
ahh... that'll break a few vending machine bill acceptors...

WpgLwr, great observation...we need more things to collect!! how about notes commemorating American History (like the 1976 $2 note) with beautiful reliefs on the reverse by noted American artists?
