Copper can take on many unusual shades in different environmental conditions.

Even sneezing, saliva, salt from perspiration, cup holder damage from acid drinks, heat, alterations of the surface, glue, paint, varnish, storing in a paper envelope, albums toning, PVC contamination from soft flexible flips and soft plastic tubes, solder, writing utensils, make up, garage alterations, sanding, filing with a steel file, stored in a hot location in outside storage, coins left outdoors, metal detector finds, squashing, being sot by guns, BB guns and probably more ways like improper damage to a coin alters the surface and it a coin is damage, it is just a face value coin.

Keep the best, spend the rest. Their job they were created for is making change. We are the ones that demand the best. So save the better ones.

Coop pretty much covered everything, I'll just add, various tonal shades are perfectly normal. Once in a while you might find a coin particularly striking and decide to keep it, but others might consider it only as damage. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

With all that said, I'd say exposure to one (or more) environmental agents--as the frog notes.
