Given the photos, I'm thinking the coin may have been exposed to a acidic agent. Also, this appears to be a large date, given the shape of the 2 (in spite of the trailing end of the 2 having taken what looks like a circulation hit). Others will be along to comment.

I am not an expert however that is definitely a large date penny. I am not sure what caused the wear on the coin but it is really beat up.

More of an example of extreme die wear. Note the devices are moving towards the edge of the device. Part of the reason to replace the worn swollen master hub during the year.

Doing this created the a large and small date that year.

Same was going on the the 1982 quarter, but they waited until the next year to change that out.

Note the bust sizes and the devices locations. Even Machine Doubling made the rim to be altered.

When you say "critical die state doubling" in the title, are you referring to the extreme Die Deterioration causing some doubling effects?

Can you show a close-up of the extra Memorial Arch and give us the weight please?
Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups.
