@plank, first welcome to CCF. Second, without an overall pic to provide a frame of reference plus some idea of what you are seeing with the coin in hand, I'm not really sure what you are seeing. Can you please provide a little more information plus an overall pic of each side of this coin? Thx.

Looks like an overpolished die.

This variety will only occur on the Denver minted 1972 Half. Until we see clear overall pics of the front and back of your coin then we are hard pressed to give a solid answer. Welcome to the forum too!!!

Really cannot tell if the Initials are there or not. Not sure if it is a focus or glare issue.

But as Oldforman stated, it looks like a polished die that reduced the initials.

Most of the 'FG' is is there. This is not a die variety, but a polished die issue:
