My husband found a 1940's Wheat penny at an old house he was remolding back in the summer. We have taken several photos and still can not tell exactly what the date is. It's in fairly good condition considering but it does have some wear, so I don't know if it may also have a dye crack on both sides or the age of it. Can someone please help?

My instinctive reaction would be 1945.

Thank you that's what I thought but wasn't sure if maybe someone had tried to make it into a 43 or if it came from the mint that way

Wouldn't come from the mint that way, it has taken a hit that has distorted the 5. It is just damage.

To CCF , well it certainly didn't come from the mint that way , the coin is beat to smithereens and really don't believe there are any die cracks ; Just scratches ,digs ,hits ,and gouges . It is definitely a 1945 .

Note the differences in shapes of the last digits: The bottom of the '3' is much lower than the bottom of the '5'.
