I've been looking for a high-grade 1923-S for some time. Prices for any coins grading over VF always seemed excessive but I can't expect them to go down anytime soon. So, I went for this piece. It's my favorite purchase from our October Fresno Coin Show.

How would you call the grade?

Wow, nice coin! Loads of protected luster on there. I think theres just a little bit too much wear for a 58, so I'd say it's a 55, but incredibly strong for the grade.

By the way whats going on underneath the outstretched hand?

Good eye Adam! I noticed that feature and went on Heritage to view other 1923-S Walkers. I quickly found two examples with the same mark, although it is less pronounced on those coins. That suggests it's a die crack that had enlarged by the time my coin was struck. Here's an image of a PCGS MS-64 coin with this feature, from the Heritage website.

I'll say AU58 as well. Is that a die crack from the rim through the mint mark?

Certainly no less than 55, 58 would not surprise.

I say AU-55. Too many nicks and little scuffs for it to be AU-58. Not to mention the "claw" to the right of the "L" and the ding under the eagle's claw just above the "LL".

I finally got back some coins that were sent to PCGS back in January. This was the only one that got a good result. Almost makes up for the grading fees I wasted on several others.....
