Hey Coin Collectors,

I stumbled upon this today. I am not very versed in Quarters. But this specimen may appear to have some doubling on the reverse on the letters "U" and "R" in the word "Quarter" and the left side of The eagle's wing. Check it!

Machine doubling, it seems. Die Deterioration may be a background factor as well.

Machine Doubling is not actual doubling of the devices, but a reduction of the devices that area on the coin, removing the contour of the devices. This can happen in one or more directions after the strike, depending how loose the machine is.
Single direction Machine Doubling:
1970-D-Quarter---Slight-Doubling-On-Reverse
Two different directions:
1970-D-Quarter---Slight-Doubling-On-Reverse

Where dies the contour go? It is pushed aside, often making the devices taller:
1970-D-Quarter---Slight-Doubling-On-Reverse
1970-D-Quarter---Slight-Doubling-On-Reverse

Even doubled dies can be affected by Machine Doubling:
1970-D-Quarter---Slight-Doubling-On-Reverse
Note the dates on this 1969-S DDO-001? You see the hub doubling present. The yellow arrows are pointing towards the MD on this doubling die. Again note that the doubled die has the hub doubling on the die, but right after the strike, the machine altered the devices. So Machine Doubling is not a doubled die, as doubled dies are on the die. Machine Doubling is damage to the fresh struck coin, right after the strike. (removing the contour edges from the design/devices on the coins.

But always educational. Perhaps others may benefit from your question as well.
