Any thoughts on what could have caused the contact marks on the rim? Thanks for any help!

Not sure exactly what caused it but it's PMD, possibly done on purpose to try and sell as a mint error.

I have seen that before.
I may be wrong but I think it is caused by the crimping machine that seals the package.

It's not a mint error, it is an error that happened at the mint. It is a packaging error.

At first it looks cool but as mentioned it is a damaged coin.

It is were noticed when you received the coin, you could have received a replacement. But too late now. The damage turns it into a cull coin. (You could save it to show to new collectors on what not to collect. (Show and tell item)

Yes, crimping/sealing machine damage. Sadly, mint sets were not asssembled at a slow, loving pace.

Post minting damage. Not an minting error, blame the packing machine.
