Hi all,
Just wondering what is the best way to store aluminium-bronze coins to preserve that lovely lustre they have when they are new. Mine don't seem to look as shiny as they used to.

I have an almost complete type set of commemorative issued for circulation coins of all denominations 5 Cents - Two Dollars, since the beginning of decimalization, in 1966. There would be somewhere near 200 different coins, all taken from pocket change over a period of about 5 years. The collecting approach consists of a 2 liter jar, and I toss anything that may be interesting in the jar. Every six months or so I sort through them all, add some to my collection and return the rest to circulation, by paying the exact amount for whatever I purchase. I have a small 'money bin', for coins in my car, that holds up tp 100 coins. When a better example of a coin comes along that I already have, the upgrade coin replaces it. Average condition AU. Every coin is in a standard cardboard 2x2, and they are in 20 pocket album pages. After all of this effort the value of my collection? - face value. Where is the profit and motivation? The thrill the hunt.

2x2 mylar/cardboard flips. Cool and relatively dry environment.

I personally prefer coin capsules in PVC sheets. Like Sel, I'm frequently upgrading coins from noodling so it's easy to swap them with a capsule. If you are buying spanky new sets that won't require upgrading then mylar flips are probably the way to go.

In a VST album, but worried about PVC plastics - so this may change.

this might help.
After getting badly caught out 30 years ago with early 1990's $1 and $2 coins ( all ex mint sets } getting discoloured with some getting slightly pitted although they were all in good self adhesive 2 x 2 holders ( even a few 1992 $1 Olympic coins -ouch !! ). I started washing each $1 and $2 coin in luke warm water with a little bit of soap and then rinsed them thoroughly, pat them dry and blow on each coin as though I'm cleaning my glasses and then gently wiping the coin with a soft rag ( an old T shirt is good ). All the $1 and $2 coins have stayed sparkling brand new since.
Yes, a bit of extra effort is needed but my coins will stay as they are forever. Motto : do it once and do it right.
Princetane
I admire your diverse knowledge and how you write your many welcomed contibutions. You're very well versed.
In my early days when storing $1 and $2 coins in albums I found that putting a small square piece of photocopy paper behind and in front of each coin, even if the coins are in 2 x 2's, prevented contact with PVC pocket of the album.
I store all my coins - 1c to $2 -standing upright in 2 x 2 holders in lined ANZAC biscuit tins and have a small square piece of photocopy paper between each coin with a cardboard divider between each row and, although all coins are in self adhesive 2 x2 holders, each 2 x 2 holder has been stapled and the 4 staples crimped flat with a small pair of pliers.
I hope any/some of the above is food for thought, cheers.

Thanks for the replies,
I, like Princetane, keep mine in VST pages. I think I should have taped the pockets shut to keep out the atmosphere.
I am one of those collectors who has to keep every single high grade coin I find and so I have 1000s of them, which seems like way to many to put them all in 2x2. I think I'll just put the very best coins in 2x2 and leave the rest to fend for themselves in VST pages.
It seems finding nice coins is easier ( and less expensive) than storing them. Of course on the rare occasions I buy some NCLT coins I leave them in their packaging. They seem pretty safe in there.

Even the modern packaging needs to be monitored. I have seen samples of the thin plastic covering turning brittle over time and cracking. This may also depend on the environment.

Yes, but I do check the coins and albums at least fortnightly and make sure they are not moved in and out too much.
In general I am satisfied so far, the coins and album pages have remained clean and clear.
However all my better coins (Any Predecimal - like 1932 Florins and 1938 Crowns all reside in 2 x 2 Mylar flips (2 brands JCB and now SAFLIP). Same with all those prize winning halfcrowns and florins. I inspect a lot and these are in albums with non corrosive pages and acid free paper stored in the coolest and driest cupboard in my house with those humidity hippo air drier things.
Every now and then I get an album out at a time, either to 1. Add a new coin 2. Upgrade a coin I have 3. Just look at them, whats the point in having all these nice coins and never doing anything with them. Shiny halfcrowns and florins are designed to be looked at, admired and gloated over. They are like my LSD and make me high.
I inspect a lot, I am not wasting money on good coins, to watch them go bad.

Does anyone use that VST Australian Decimal Coin Album where you can supposedly store your entire decimal collection 1966-2022 in a single album. I have my doubts, the screws that fasten the album together don't seem to allow for a very thick album.

Leigh, you can get brass extensions that screw on and give you enough space for about another 5 pages.

Thanks Troae, these must be what you mean. $60 for the album, another $10 for the extensions, supplies/accessories aren't exactly cheap these days!!

All the coins in my collection are stored in 2x2s. Spares are just on plastic baggies. I never leave coins in their mint packaging.
