Ive been searching for errors for 5 months or so and have purchased and referenced the book strike it rich with pocket change by ken potter and Dr. Brian Allen. I see no mention of this particular error in the book or online only a mintmark error is listed in the book. Any insight is appreciated.

to the CCF

Just FYI
The correct terminology is Doubled Die and a DD is not an error, it is a variety.

Agree with Dearborn
What you have is Machine Doubling and a partially Grease Filled Die on the IGWT,.

Welcome to the forum. While the letters on your coin to exhibit Machine Doubling (MD) as stated above, the correct terminology of this form of Machine Doubling that appears on your coin is called Ejection Doubling. It is just another form of useless doubling, and there are many form of useless doubling. Ejection doubling causes the raised metal on the letters of the coin that you are seeing. I also agree that the lack of letters in IGWT was caused by a partially Grease Filled Die.

Very cool. Thanks for the welcome and replies! my mistake on incorrect terminology. Would you say this is rare for a quarter in general or this date? Does it hold value as such if it is due to rarity or because of Machine Damage and Grease Filled Die? Is the MD more prominent than usual or par for the course? Thank you and I have more posts to come on other coins but this one perturbed me the most.

MD and minor Grease Filled Dies are fairly common and don't usually carry any premium, it's good to have one to compare MD and DDD compared to a true doubled die.

. This coin is worth face value and does not carry a premium. If you look long enough you will find many coins that exhibit this same thing. Zinc Lincolns Cents prior to 2009 seem to exhibit, quite often, this same form of MD I spoke about.

BTW - a good place to learn about the differences (with pics!) is search "doubling" at error-ref.com.

Thank you glad to be here. Wish I had paid attention to this subject earlier in life I can only imagine how many interesting pieces of currency have escaped me due to ignorance of the existence of this subject. I'm sure I'm not the only one to think it
