I agree with Struck Through Grease. Looks like parts of LIBERTY might be lightly struck as well. I think worth saving in a 2x2. Well done!

Nice struck through! Can you get a clear closeup of the date/mm and ERTY of LIBERTY?

Could it be a weak strike on the reverse due to the amount of metal taken up from the obverse side - the shoulder taking up so much metal to form? This seems me that this is a common area for weak strikes.

EDIT to Add: The missing 'chunk' could be a planchet flaw resulting on the obverse having a weak strike on the IBE in liberty.. (don't know about the 'L' as it is off frame in the image...

Struck Through Grease on the O but wouldn't the wheat area be struck through debris?

Weight might help figure what took place. If close to normal it may have been a struck through on the reverse (that jumped off in circulation) and as mentioned Struck Through Grease. If the weight and thickness is not normal it could be a weak strike caused by a planchet issue. Also there was a clash issue on the obverse and the dies may have been over polished? So many could be's on this one.

So, it is light weight, maybe a thinner planchet than normal. That jives with I]it being a weak strike due to not enough metal to fill all voids.
I still think that it was a damaged planchet prior to striking creating all the weakness we see.

Can you give us a picture of the coin of the edge together with a normal weight copper coin for a comparison?

As I suspected, the 'L' was struck much better than the 'IBE' because the reverse area behind the L was not over that big diviot like where the IBE is.

Thank you for taking the extra pics. I thought there was a possible new DDO but the full coin pics were a little deceptive. It has enough circulation wear that I can't tell if it matches one of the existing DDO's. One thing I did notice, I think the same mint worker did most of the sans serif mint marks, they are extremely close in location on the RPM's.
