it appears some of the S Mint Marks appear to be open and closed on the top of the S. I believe its Machine Doubling that make the S appear that way?

Maybe a east RPM? With a MS red like that, you would have die markers if you think its one of the many RPM's for the date / MM.

@arby, generally speaking I don't think that MD causes an enlargement of design elements. As all the mintmarks were added by hand, I wonder if the second one wasn't hit harder, thereby sinking it deeper in the die. I'm interested to hear what others think.

Have you checked for an RPM attribution number?

By looking at the position of the Two mint marks, it is evident they were punched with Two different dies.

I'm a big proponent of new (and old alike) collectors researching their finds because it helps them learn and gain valuable knowledge in numismatics. However, I did have to look into this one myself (op's second pic) to see if there is a match for an RPM, granted the op's coin 'is' an RPM. It looks like it has potential but then again pictures and glare can be misleading. "If" this is an RPM, the only one it remotely resembles IMHO is VV's 1954-S RPM-004 simply due to the positioning of the mm. It's also listed on coppercoins as well. However, the S on the op's coin is just way too close to the bottom of the 5 so I think that would even rule out the RPM I mentioned. Need to look a that one real close arby96. If in fact it is an RPM, there is a possibility it may be a new discovery. Not trying to get your hopes up but people do find "firsts" or else we wouldn't have all of the good websites in which to refer. I'm hoping it's not a lighting issue or glare showing that extra curve on the S of your coin. Just look at it very good and make sure it's not glare or all forbid just MD.......

Looks more like a contact mark on the central area of the mintmark to me?

yep , maybe the second MM was hit too hard on the die, thus making it a bit wider and closing the top of the S
