Curious to your thoughts of this nickel, also, what's with his eye? A red streak in it, camera flash with a die crack? Trying to appear it as toning? Didn't say any of that in description. This is on ebay for a bid.

Looks like it has been stored improperly from the looks of the green (plastic or PVC) discoloration on both the obverse and reverse at the 12 o'clock position. The eye is normal.

Looks to me like AU-58 . And yes I agree with improper storage .

A little difficult to ascertain storage issues given the photos posted--if there are any issues, they're not leaping out at me. We're all at a disadvantage because we don't have the coin in-hand under different lighting conditions. As far as possible grade, I'm thinking high AU range. Nice coin, in my opinion.

Looks really nice. I have seen way more nickels without steps than with. It is possible that the lighting is the culprit. Not to mention the red background.
