I bought this MS64 random date Peace dollar off APMEX for $70 and I received an example with some pretty unattractive toning on the obverse, should I consider returning it to get my money back or keep it? Does unattractive toning like this hurt the value of the coin causing it to be less valuable even though it's an MS64 compared to a blast white example?

The toning in this case definitely detracts from the value, and I would certainly return it if you have the option.

Ooooo ouch! Usually I like natural toning, but this is honestly the ugliest toning I've ever seen. I would return it.
Since most regular coin collectors won't like the toning, the price will be affected significantly. It has to be a really good deal to overcome the uglyness.

to the CCF. That is ugly and I can't image any collector finding that splotchy toning to be attractive. Send it back if you have that option.

Hi, I purchased a few coins from APMEX & was not a happy customer. I returned 2 of 3 & will not buy from them again.

Return that ugly coin without a hint of apology. APMEX is a bullion company that moved into numismatics. It worked for awhile. Now, APMEX is a blight on the hobby, dealing in heavy volumes of damaged, cleaned and otherwise third-rate coins. I used to enjoy buying the occasional random date coin from APMEX & had reasonably good success. For a couple of years it was fine. Then sometime in 2018, with raw coins sold with a suggested grade, I got a series of harshly cleaned specimens I had to return. The return process was easy enough, and I kept trying for awhile, but then even TPG certified coins arrived with obvious value-destructive flaws & distractions, just like this one. I stopped purchasing anything from APMEX, but I gave the company one last try a couple of months ago, ordering two random date XF raw Morgans. One was damaged, the other harshly cleaned. APMEX gave me the privilege of waiting nearly three weeks for delivery, too. Definitely a company to avoid. It certainly won't get my business again.

APMEX are good at what they started of doing, selling bullion. They made the mistake of getting into unfamiliar territory when they started selling coins.

I've had no trouble with bullion coins. Sometimes APMEX offers better date bullion coins at close to melt, but these have disappeared over the last year. A better date with flaws doesn't bother me if it's bullion.

If only the TPG's did a "Details: Ugly" designation. This coin is valued as a Details coins on that unfortunate toning.

One of the ugliest coins I have ever seen. How it warranted a grade of MS-64 is beyond me. Toning on the obverse is horrendous and the reverse is weakly struck with serious marks too. Looks nothing like the lustrous example they baited you with. Return it and put that outfit on your blacklist.

that's the problem when you sell 90 coins with a stock photo. From the screen shot it looks like you bought it off ebay..Open a return request, with item not as described. they will have to get you a return postage for you. You won't have to pay anything to return it.
