1883 V Nickel With Gold Tone

This coin along with many others were in a bag for over 100 years, 60 of them in my possession and the rest with my aunt and her parents. This nickel with its gold tone, I wonder if it might have once been passed off as a Racketeer Nickel? There were 140 nickels of which I sold maybe 50 and still have the rest, but none of rest of them have the gold tone.

@ccap, obviously it is pretty hard to know for sure, but if your nickel doesn't have reeds cut into the edge, then I think it is less likely to be the real deal. Here is a prior CCF link with some examples:

Racketeers Nickel once plated Gold to look like a $5 gold piece . Now plating wearing off .

I agree with T-Bop. The 1883 Nickels were first in that series and only had a large V on the back. When gold plated many were passed as $5 gold. The mint then issued an edited reverse with the word "CENTS".

Yes, Spence is correct. No reeds, no racketeer. Just toned gold to look like an old racketeer coin.
