I have been working on the extremely difficult task of completing a Seated Liberty dime series by date and mint mark for several years. This example of the rare and hard to come by 1874 cc popped up and I'd like some serious opinions. Is the damage that bad to not make an offer of $$6500? Having starred at it over the last week I'm leaning towards making the move since, again, these do not show up very often and when they do, no where close to that price even in a nice good. What I have thus far in this series are similar in grade/appearance- minus the damage. Only a few are cleaned, but not harshly or to the point of being unattractive. So this is why I'm asking if you would make an offer with those things in mind. Or what you think in general. Thanks in advance. https://www.ebay.com/itm/224736342565 ANA member - PAN Member - BCCS Member There are no problems only solutions - the late, great John Lennon

10,817 4th lowest
Personally, I don't find it an attractive coin but I understand wanting to have a complete set. I would absolutely pass. If you're going to have an important coin you have to shoot higher in grade and probably money. Anyone that can pay near that much for it could probably afford twice that much for 4 times the pleasure of owning a nicer coin.

If I bought that coin, buyer's remorse would set in eventually, and I'd rather be missing the date.

It's a nice low mintage but I wouldn't buy it for just a hole filler .

Yes, understand it's a tough decision. I'd walk away.

I would never buy a details coin to finish a set that I've worked so hard on to complete. Never.

Would it been a $15K coin if it wasn't for the damage, but as other said. Pass!

I would say go with your gut. Quote: I'm leaning towards making the move Then yes! It also depends on your goals. Are you trying to make as much money as possible in the long run? Are you putting together a "good enough" set? Or maybe do you just collect what you love and enjoy the hobby?

Pass! A VG Straight is better than a VF with (pretty bad) damage.

I too am trying to complete that set. However, I'd rather have empty places than a damaged coin in a slot.

1. Will anything less than a straight-graded coin ever be acceptable to you? If not, pass on that coin. (I never had to answer that question; the only one I ever encountered was graded VG-08 and I bought it.)
2. Do you reasonably anticipate ever having enough money to buy a straight graded coin? If so, pass on that coin. (A straight-graded VG-08 will probably cost you between $10,000 and $15,000.)

TNG nailed my dilemma. Yes, I could probably afford a straight grade VG10/F-12. But, as I said I've only seen one other since beginning this series which was in a grade with a price to match well beyond what I could spend. I appreciate the replies and suggestions. The series I'm assembling is for my sole enjoyment in grades that show use as intended while leaning on eye appeal and consistency. As for a future profit, that's not why I began collecting nor why I continue. Also, the damage is beyond what I'd consider for any other in this series but it and the 1873 cc are going to be the final pair to acquire, if at all. In conclusion, I believe I'll let the auction expire as there's no refunds if it would be beyond my acceptance in hand. But man, what a tough date to locate!
