I've had some great experiences at auction this year. And a few foul-ups, usually when I stray into coin series with which I lack any particular expertise.

I usually avoid coins with presidents on them, and I'm pretty sure this is in the foul-up category. It's butt ugly, I think. Or is it? How would you grade it?

Oops ... post belongs in Modern Coin grading. Can the moderator move it, or do I start over?

The mods will move it. I'll say MS-62.

This is a date with a significant number of high grade survivor coins. It's not unusual to see slabbed coins running to MS-67.

Solid strike. Clearly an UNC roll survivor. There are a few dings on the obverse (especially the gouge at the bottom of the knot), but the reverse is strong. IMHO the obverse is MS-63, and the reverse is at least MS-65, for a net of MS-64. The rest is just toning. It's spotty, but not enough to snag an eye appeal knock.
Rest in Peace

Nice , I wouldn't say it's butt ugly at all . A few tiny ticks , a little black tone . MS-63 or 64 .

Not my series but it looks 63 to me. 64 if it didn't get knocked for the obverse distractions.

I'm gonna say it squeezed out an ms66 based on what you said...clean fields, toning like this isn't uncommon, though it isn't very eye appealing to many of us.im not sure that some of the marks on the eagle aren't raised...the high areas are clean other than some light chatter on the right wing.

Looks gem to me.

PS. Note that the lines on the eagles neck are parallel to the die polish lines coming off the back of the head, which is what leads me to believe they are not damage to the coin.

It looks MS64 to me but I think it got a generous MS65 on the slab.

The only contact marks that I saw on the reverse are the road rash along the top of the eagle's left wing (our visual right), next to "MER" of AMERICA. The gouge on the hair below the knot is my biggest concern.

Way over-graded, if you ask me. That ugly toning was cleverly obscured in the main auction pics, though visible on pics provided two clicks in.
