The color of this War Nickel is way off. It is very brassy looking. I gave it an acetone bath thinking it had residue of something on it but the color did not change. Would this be considered an Improper Alloy mix? Thanks much.

@vest, how is the weight? Is it within mint specs?

It is 4.88g so it is just within specs but a little light.

I agree with Merclover, I have seen and own some nickels that have a goldish toning to them. It is fairly common.

Other than my acetone bath, I do not know how to tell if it was cleaned. Do you?

Anything abrasive removes the original surface. Once that happens, the value decreases. When looking at coins like this, note if it is just damage, or original. If it were original surfaces, then we would know that was something. But when the circulation damage happens, then the clear line of original is called into question. I'd hold onto to for now. It is a silver melt coin. There just seems like a few contact marks on the building that calls into question if is was a mint error issue of not?

Thanks Coop. I do believe it is a mint error but as to exactly what, I may find out as I learn more.

I definitely see the lamination errors but I wouldn't call it an improperly mixed alloy, maybe toning.

How does the edge look on the "laminated" area north east of the memorial and affecting the date? It looks like it could possibly be a cracked planchet?

Edit: I'm a bozo, just noticed the title says cracked planchet! Nice find.
