The previous topic on cleaning coins with Acetone is over 6 years old, so I'm going to try it on some coins found in the dirt by Metal Detector.
About 30 coins of various denominations Excluding Lincoln Copper penny's are being treated in a glass jar w/screw-on lid for 12 hours with agitation on occasion. The rinse will be with distilled water for 1 hour. Test results will be posted here when all is completed.

Be careful with the agitation as the acetone may attack the seal on the lid.

and to the CCF!

I've used pure acetone for many, many years. I'd suggest 24 hours, given these are metal detector finds.

I've never had any issues with copper and acetone. Maybe others have?

Acetone is a good option to removing crud, glue and other residues. A full day is recommended. but NO agitation you can damage the coin, especially if you put more than one coin in the jar together.

I always remember stories about how if you leave a Copper coin in Acetone and then in the Sun. It will react and cause all kinds of problems. I tried it for weeks and nothing happened. However, I may have been using the wrong Sun.

These are dug coins. Pretty unlikely that a little jostling around with other coins in a jar is going to hurt them. Would be interesting to see before and after pics.

to CCF!
