Does this coin appear to have been cleaned? What I havent seen before is the shadow under the stars and date, its like droplets hung under the coin when dipped? I have seen the opposite with dark black material around the devices. *** Edited by Staff - Added images to post ***Edited by kevin917z 12/29/2021 12:40 pm

. Those marks are not from dipping. It is a known phenomenon on Morgans, just do not remember what it is called. Someone will be along to help. John1

It's called pullaway toning, fairly common in uncirculated Morgans and some other series. Yours looks AU, and I don't see any obvious signs of cleaning or excessive dipping. to CCF!

Many AU examples of Morgan dollar issues that get pricey in MS condition were dipped in an effort to pass as (commercial unc.) MS years ago. Your example appears to be mid AU and was likely a PL example when struck. If it was dipped it does not appear to be over-dipped. to the CCF!!!

My thought is this would come back AU-53 even know it has the 55 Look to me. To many contact marks to grade 55 in my opinion but a super nice example.

Photos are too brightly lit to see the surfaces very well. There are lots of small hits and scratches which may not be from an improper cleaning but they sure do hurt eye appeal. The left obverse field especially looks excessively abraded given the AU+ level of wear.
Might get a straight AU-50 or 53 grade if submitted. Can you take new photos using less light?

here is another one I question to having been cleaned... Again I'm trying to learn to spot cleaned coins and can pick up the obvious ones but some of these I really have a hard time on. I often will check ebay and coin sites for slabbed coins that are cleaned to educate myself a little more. have watched numerous youtube videos as well. Not the best pics here.

AU-50, many heavier scratches. Very possible wipe, this would fall under the cleaning category in my opinion. I don't see any obvious signs of dipping.

The photos are not well focused and there are washed out areas that make it difficult to assess the surfaces, but there is at least a suggestion of a cleaning with some horizontal parallel lines.

Quote: "Dipping" is not considered cleaning... -from PCGS website. Absolutely 100% TRUE! While the majority of collectors prefer toned coins, I'm part of a large but silent group that prefers 20th Century silver coins to be fully lustrous, looking like they just came off the press, just as the coin designer envisioned his/her coins would look. And 100% of my coins eligible for a CAC have a CAC, despite the fact these coins have been dipped. Obviously, the dipping was done gently enough to still merit CAC stickers, and to reveal the full luster hiding under a skin of toning. Here's three photos of one of my coins. There's absolutely no doubt it's been dipped! A 105 year old silver coin. Steve

perhaps these are a bit better, the field is proof like and seems the imperfections get magnified greatly by camera, in hand it looks much better.
