When I first saw it on offer, I had to rub my eyes as this is something that do not appear often and if they do, often ask for the price of literally an arm or leg. It is probably one of the most expensive purchase I did and had to sell some coins later to make up for it. Didn't pay much as what the average price of what it would go for today so it is a bit of a lucky win.

This particular coin was struck for only three years 1866 - 1868. Total mintage was only a mere 2.109 million with a lot melted down or destroyed along the years. Even in damaged condition, they command some serious price.

I couldn't quite get the color right but it's a solid XF condition, problem free

I have completed the Hong Kong Dansco type set a while back and the one I have is a corroded one.

The rarest type of the Hong Kong coins is the half dollar, struck in 1866 and 1867 with a mintage of mere 59,000.

A somewhat underrated type is the 1902 - 1905 20 cents which for whatever reason is hard to come past.

The rest can be challenging but doable.

Today Hong Kong coin prices are going through the roof. Perhaps there are a lot of patriotic Chinese who are determined to hoard them and hide them away to erase any Western / foreign elements. Worse still destroy them (if you follow the news of what's happening in Hong Kong). Or they are just buying them as investment.

Please feel free to post any Hong Kong coins.

Happy New Year!

I have a counterfeit Hong Kong 10 Cent piece.
And then for comparison I bought a single lot of 10 genuine coins.
After comparison weights, measures and photos, the bad and good were added to the collection and documented in the binder pages.

Fabulous pick-up, gxseries! Makes me wish I'd kept my blue-toned AU example of this one, but my then-spouse wanted a house instead. As I recall, mine sold in one of The Money Company's Hong Kong auctions in the $1000-1200 range...circa 1982. (Also had to say goodbye then to my two George III Gold Coast proofs and a few other "British World" rarities...very sad.)

Congratulations on a stunning addition to any collection!

@gxseries, Congratulation on getting this excellent piece of history.

As a previous Hong Kong resident I know and kept up with the news and people, it is so sad of the turbulent events which many of the folks there are going through, people living in democratic societies is blessed with their freedom in allowing to voice and criticize one's concern.
One of the reason when I first started to collect US coinage I choose the Winged Head Dime series, the words "freedom of thought" came into my mind when I first saw this simple and attractive art, imagine if people couldn't think of themself because of certain rules they need to obey by in a communistic government.

I was lucky enough to visit Hong Kong. I bought a couple of coins there as a souvenir from the country. These were 10 cents in 1974, and several banknotes: 10 dollars in 1976, 1 cent (1971-81) and one Macau 50 patacas banknote in 2009.

daltonista: keeping a wife happy is definitely worth more than a coin any time any day! I'm sure your house would be worth more than the coin today. Would be nice to see if there are any photos of it floating around.

I'm actually a fan of the scallop 2 dollar coin. Quite neat.
