I had three titles for this post.

1. - 1972 Proof Set
Or
2. - I need to start paying attention to descriptions and photos on ebay
Or
3. - What the heck did I buy?

Description number one, won out, but I'm still wondering "what the heck did I buy? Although I bought it as such, I'm not sure this really is a Proof Set so I'll refer to it as a "Collection of Coins" until coached otherwise. This "collection of coins" has a half, quarter, nickel, dime, and 2 cents. The only "S" mint mark is on one of the cents.

Thanks in advance.

Hawkeye

P.S. I'll do better on the Photo's next time. The hot spots from the plastic are a pain.

From the way it's packaged it looks like a mint set not a Proof set. What are the mint marks? Are they all the same mintmark? Just my opinion, so let's wait and see what other members think on this one.

With the exception of the "S" cent, the remainder have no mint mart. Here's a link to the Auction where I got it http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...280296616476 Until I got my Red Book in the mail, I bought this thinking that 1972 came in plastic like the 60's sets. I know differently now.

This is part of a mint set, not the whole thing. If it had been complete, there would be another cello pack...and this is not a proof set. They are packaged in hard plastic inside a blue box.

Unfortunately, it looks like you have 1/2 of a 1972 mint set - the Philadelphia part. There would be another cellophane pack without the s-lincoln and they'd have D-mintmarks.

Looking at the auction, it looks like it might be too late to return it. But if you can, I would try. The title is obviously wrong, but the picture appears to be what you got.

To be honest, it's probably not worth the time. What you got is worth probably $2 - $3. You might want to chalk it up as a bad experience.

BTW, when bidding on stuff like that, do a search on E-bay with the same title to see what else shows up. This is also useful to determine what the going price is.

You have been coached above well. I would only add that your cello package has a blue colored perimeter strip on the package, indicating from the Philly Mint, the other half of that mint set , from the Denver Mint has a red colored perimeter strip on the package.A Mint set comes with both.
Also a proof set usually comes just like that(only in certain years) and has the same package, with no strip at all, good luck, Mike...

That's here in town... funny!
I live in P'cola.

I'd leave neutral feedback for him not ID'ing the set
correctly. You can't neg him because you saw the pic,
so you have some liability. You also shouldn't reward
him with a positive either. The only way the feedback
system works is if we use it, so don't sit on your hands
either! Good luck. Chalk it up to learning.

Thanks everyone. I'll reach out to the seller, but I think that this is going to be a $6.00 "learning experience" for me. I'll Kabiye_lady's advice. No doubt a case of auction fever for me.
