Would someone help me with this 1964-D Jefferson nickel? How can I tell if it is improper annealing or environmental? I have seen on other forums if high points are showing silver it's environment. Is this every situation with improper annealing or just the black beauty? I have a 1939 as well but there is silver showing

Agree, environmental damage. May have spent some time in moist soil or in the sludge of a slowly drying-up pond.

I appreciate the responses, I have researched so many sites on improper annealing and seems to have many different types. Can you tell me how to know if it's environmental so I'm not thinking everything with discoloration is improper annealing?

A pock-marked appearance is often indicative of environmental corrosion.

With an improperly annealed nickel, you would still see the coins luster on it. With this one, you cannot.

Environmental staining/gunk buildup. Not every coin is an error coin.
