i have several coins form the 1960's that have proof like qualities. attached is a 1962 Jefferson. is there some way of determining if they are in fact proof. I read a post from someone who had a similar question about a Lincoln Cent. one of the answers from one of the resident experts (and believe me - I do NOT questions their knowledge, or expertise), answered something to the affect - that the finish tells the whole story. whereas that answer might appease most - to me it was a bit like asking my grandfather a question and his answer was something like "it's so - because I SAID it's so". something less than satisfying. so - could this be a proof coin, and why, (or why not)?

One way to tell (without a really good photo) is to see if the coin has full steps. Very few coins of this era did, so it would not be far out of the realm of possibility for it to be a proof if it has full steps on the reverse.

on the steps. Expecially the D mints. If you have 4 or 5 steps on this it is a better coin than as a regular 1962.
A larger image would help. I have found a few dazzling 1960 through 1963 nickels but still I could tell them instantly from a proof. The lettering and design is not nearly as sharp.

PS: I used CTRL wheel scroll to zoom on your coin and it looks like an unusual business strike to me.

Another indicator is the rims, business strikes have rims that are a bit rounded and proof rims are squared off.

All proofs should have squared rims, it is indicative of the high pressure strikes that proofs receive. The steps should also be an excellent indicator. I believe that the business strike 1960-67 nickels had poorly formed stairs due to the hubs themselves and proofs should have full steps.
