Hey everyone I'm new here. I've had this penny forever and just wondering what's going on with it. I always assumed it was post-mint damage but I just don't know. Any input is appreciated!

@fbo, first welcome to CCF. Second that cent looks like it has been partially covered in weld spatter. Can you please post the weight of this coin? Thx.

There is no way that could happen during the striking of the coin so it has to be PMD.

It may be solder, it may be a thick (now dried) batch of crud--like old gum or something similar. If you're up for it, try soaking the coin in 100% acetone for a full day or two. Can't hurt.

This looks like post mint damage. Having the weight would tell us a lot.

If it were welded, it would have melt the coin. I agree with solder. That happens a lot on coins.

Thanks everyone I appreciate all the help. I agree, solder seems to make the most sense. I'll hang on to it and weigh it sometime just for the heck of it. I'm just going through my bag of old coins I collected when I was younger and figured I'd get some answers on this one finally.
