I found this coin at one of the auctions and just wanted to know your opinion . The coin has serious damage and I would never take such a coin into my collection, but I can't afford a good coin because 20 cents is not the cheapest type and I really hope I can win this coin at a very low price. What are your final cost assumptions?

I would avoid a coin in this condition. You should be able to find a raw problem free example in low grade G-4 for about $100, or a slabbed G-6 in the $140 range. With some searching you may be able to get a better grade like a VG-8 for that same money. I would wait and save some money for a better example than to settle for a coin like you have shown.

Even severely damaged rare coins have some value,
but not much.

Nevertheless.
MisterT has expressed the most commonly held opinion.

If a G-4 20 Cents undamaged has a value of $100, then this coin would have a value of perhaps $10, but the problem then becomes, that due to the damage, it would still be hard to find a buyer.
Almost all collectors would opt for the undamaged $100 equivalent condition coin instead.

I do, in fact, have a small number of holed or otherwise severely damaged coins in my collection, but I have acquired almost all of them at next to nothing prices. This applies especially to American and British small silver coins, which have been holed for jewelry purposes.

That was most probably the reason why the coin pictured was holed. Such coins are never graded, and thus keeping it in a slab is rather pointless.
I would be happy to buy this coin out of a dealer's junk box for less than $10.

I will still try to win it at auction, but I don't think I will pay more than $35-40. Surprisingly, at the moment there is already a bet of $ 10 on this coin.

If you want to take a shot at it, start your bid calculation at $50 and subtract ALL charges (S&H, auction fees, etc.)

I would not want this in my collection. If you really NEED a 20 cent piece find one that will be appreciated by others and it will maintain and possibly grow in value. I have been collecting since I was a child and have had the NEED fever, resist purchasing poor quality damaged coins with zero eye appeal.

That's $5 in my eyes. Keep us updated what the final sale price is.

Not to offend, but it's too ugly to buy. Get a genuine one in a modest condition. You will never be happy with the compromise, UNLESS your purpose is to show an example of coin jewelry.

That's not worth $35 in my opinion. Hard to imagine why someone sent it in for grading.

My opinion, for what it may be worth:
I would buy it a maximum price of $10, but not above that.

At that price, I would have to buy it over the counter at a coin show, or from a dealer direct. The extra cost of shipping fees are not justified.

This one has future buyer's remorse written all over it. Save up for a decent one.
