Hey folks,

This seller is claiming he has an 1877 Indian Head cent.

It actually looks like an 1867.

I believe this "numismatist" is intentionally selling this knowing it isn't genuine and maybe even wore the coin out.

I'm tempted to message him. . .

YIKES

Junk!! Unless the date is very, very clear.....all key date coins should be passed on.

Not an 1877 but might have some value as a PO-01 1865. Assuming there's enough date left for a grader to discern it clearly.

The seller is not worth the time of day. There are many, numerous reputable sellers on ebay and in the marketplace. You will gain nothing trying to correspond with the likes of that seller.

"Exact coin shown ships". I would hate to get an 1877 sent by mistake.
Rest in Peace

Being falsely advertised IMO -- you can't list a coin with an incomplete date as being a certain date unless there are one year only dies/die markers (cf. 1859 IHC, 1916 SLQ, 1853 Liberty Seated quarters & half dollars)

The position of the date and overall style of the obverse matches more closely with an 1867. Type I obverse so 1887, 1897 and 1907 are right out.

The only proper way to advertise this on ebay would be as a no-date or dateless IHC.

If people want to bid on this junk, it's hard to feel sorry for them.

I won't ever justify anyone taking advantage of customers regardless of their knowledge level. As numismatists and sellers or dealers it is our duty to the hobby to educate and inform buyers and collectors and knowingly listing coins with incorrect or fraudulent information is deceptive and unethical.

Sadly, there are a lot of sellers out there like this yahoo selling the Indian Head cent who don't agree with this and are just looking to put one over on the uninformed to make a quick buck.
